Brain Exercise for a Healthier You

Is brain exercise software a worthwhile investment? Maybe, it really depends on the quality of the program. In my opinion, which is shared by a number of experts, as long as you are learning something, the investment is worth it.
You see, the way that we increase the brain’s plasticity (grow new neurons and cells) is through learning. Many people get bored with learning, as they age, so their brains basically atrophy, like an unused muscle.
But, if we continue to learn throughout our lives, our brains will remain healthy. We will retain our memories and our mental clarity.
Some brain exercise software will help. As long as the content is challenging and there are increasingly difficult levels to tackle, you should remain interested and engaged.
On the other hand, if a program is boring, you’ll “tune out”. It can be difficult to judge a package without buying it, but there are some things that you can look for.
Who created the brain exercise software that you are considering? Was it a group of scientists or a clinical neuropsychologist? A clinical neuropsychologist specializes in assessing and treating patients with brain injuries or cognitive deficiencies, such as autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s and developmental disorders.
They have the background to develop exercises that can help all of us. If the program you are looking at was developed by a video game designer, it might be fun, but would only provide minimal benefit. In other words, you may as well save your money and play free games on line.
What benefits is the package supposed to provide? If the claims are too general, then it will probably have only limited benefits. For example, if the advertising claim says something like, “we can train our brains”, without specifically referring to what cognitive skills we will learn, it’s probably a waste of money.
It is, of course, true that we can train our brains. We do that every time that we take up a new hobby or attend a class. But, effective brain exercise software should help us do more. For example, if you want to improve your memory, there are specific exercises that can help you do that.
It’s like exercising any part of the body. You first have to decide what it is you want to accomplish. Then you choose appropriate exercises.
Remember that there are no “cure-alls” in this or any other field. Some things work for some people, but not for others. In addition, stimulating the brain is not the only important step to take.
Good nutrition is of upmost importance. Regular physical activity keeps the blood circulating. Certain supplements are beneficial, as is getting enough sleep, drinking enough water and making a genuine effort to reduce your level of stress.
In the beginning, you should choose a relatively easy program that gradually becomes more difficult. If the initial challenges are too difficult, the brain exercise software program can simply add stress, which impairs your ability to focus and learn. But, most of all, find something fun. That way, you’ll stick with the program.
