Binge-drinking linked to long-term memory damage

College students who said they participated in binge drinking scored lower on a verbal learning test than college students who don’t binge drink, according to the study at the University of Santiago of Compostela in Spain. Researchers think the cause is alcohol’s toxic effect on the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for learning and memory.
