A study recently published in the journal of Biological Psychiatry has discovered a link between accelerated dementia and traumatic brain injury (TBI) and brain infections. Individuals affected by dementia may see an acceleration of their condition when inflammation of the brain occurs because of a brain injury that also leads to an infection.

Scientists had already been aware of systemic inflammation, in which the body becomes inflamed as a whole, to have an affect on brain function, according the study; however, until recently, little research had been done on the link between systemic inflammation and dementia/neurodegenerative diseases.

The study, conducted by members from the Trinity College Dublin and University of Southampton, studied the “inflammatory response” to infection and injury of mice with previous neurodegenerative disease (brain damage caused by loss of cells and neurons). According to the study, “the response caused exaggerated symptoms of the infection, causes changes in memory and learning and leads to accelerated progression of dementia.” Patients suffering from TBI should contact their medical physician to better understand the potential risk for developing dementia.

Dealing With Dementia

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) defines dementia as a “loss of brain function,” however, the condition is not considered a single disease, but is described as a “group of illnesses that involve memory, behavior, learning and communications problems.” Dementia is also a progressive condition that is marked by a lengthy list of symptoms, as described by the NLM. Dementia is characterized by signs and symptoms such as the following:

* lack of concentration

* increased/progressive memory loss

* hallucinations/delusion

* confusion

* decrease in problem-solving and judgement

* impaired recognition

* disorientation

* motor system impairment

* memory deficit

* absent or impaired language ability

* lack of spontaneity

* irritability, poor temper control

* anxiety

* depression

* inability to read, write, speak, form words and name objects

* no observable mood

* inability to maintain employment or interact in social or personal situations

Unfortunately, treatments for dementia are slim and may only include treating symptoms with dietary supplements and prescription medicines. An article from a February 2008 New York Times article noted that long-term care is needed for dementia patients.

Overcoming TBI Risks

Individuals have suffered from a traumatic brain injury or a brain infection and thus have increased the inflammation within the brain should consider speaking with a specialized medical professional or neurologist about the potential for developing accelerated dementia.

It is also advisable for a brain injury victim to contact an experienced brain injury attorney as it may become necessary to develop a lawsuit. Individuals can receive a free legal consultation from a traumatic brain injury attorney who can offer assistance for victims of TBI.

              Doctors are working to determine the benefits of exercise regiments benefits in improving cognition and reducing normal memory loss so that specific exercises can be assigned to improve memory. Adding to the long list of benefits that exercise provides to overall health and giving more reasons to get off of the couch and get active. Studies are now showing that physical activity reduces stress and anxiety disorders that contribute to many cognitive malfunctioning attributes as well as providing evidence that exercise may prevent or delay dementia. This is great news for the many people who want to preserve their mental clarity as they reach older ages.

Cognitive benefits of physical exercise for children and adults is not as clear as the benefits of exercise on the aging but it is a start in the search for finding answers to the question “why do people forget things.” The studies indicate that exercises will ameliorate the effects of aging on the brain reducing a normal age-related decline in cognitive functioning. Cognitive functions such as planning, organization and working memory are achieved through simple measure such as increased confidence in abilities with older adults and with younger adults in the same way. So if you have been feeling forgetful or slow to process simple things, it could be that you are not getting enough exercise.

Physical activity is a catalyst to increasing and maintaining proper mental processes. Therefore it can be said that some lifestyle changes may improve cognitive functioning. Studies indicate evidence that a healthy brain diet including foods rich in omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and low glycemic carbohydrates (whole grains), daily walks, relaxation exercises and mental exercises like crossword puzzles result in brain metabolism suggesting an increase in efficiency. Reducing blood pressure, weight and cholesterol and not smoking is important for brain health in all ethnic backgrounds. Even though countless studies make these suggestions it has not been established enough to recommend specific regimens for the desired results. Increasing brain cognitive functioning can be maintained throughout a person’s life by simply living life to the fullest and by continually learning new things. While depressed moods, anxiety, and other psychological illnesses can be associated with both poor emotional and cognitive health as well, exercise is the determining factor in most improved cases.

For older adults mental stimulation is important in preventing age related cognitive declining. Regular light exercises for the elderly such as brisk walks, swimming, and other full body exercises will help to maintain the mental performance, stamina, endurance allowing for better memory and all over mental functioning and less cognitive decline. Improved blood flow to the brain will undoubtedly provide amazing benefits and prevent mental deterioration by stimulating the growth of nerve cells in the region of the brain that handles memory functioning. However conclusive the studies may seem different methodologies make it extremely difficult to make any conclusive determinations in the relationship between exercise and mental fitness. It is conclusive that regular exercise is the best treatment for improvement in overall health and maintaining overall health.

So get up, stay busy, and learn something new always for good mental fitness. Many people say that they would like to get started with exercising, but they don’t have any opportunities to do so. The truth is that almost anything can be made into an exercise. Exercise is something that comes as a part of daily life, not something that you have to seek out. So, start getting in shape by doing the simple things, and then maybe you can progress to more strenuous activities. It could be a good idea to employ the help of a physical trainer who knows the human body very well and can help you to do what needs to be done. With the mental and physical benefits, there is no reason why you should not do so. Get started today.

The foods you eat directly affects the performance of your brain. It has been proven that by eating the right food, you can boost your IQ, improve your mood, be more emotionally stable, sharpen your memory and keep your mind young.

If you give your brain the right nutrients, you will be able to think quicker, have a better memory, be better coordinated and balanced and have improved concentration.

The three key brain foods to boost your brainpower and keep your brain healthy and your mental processes operating effectively are nutritious food, water and oxygen:

Smart Foods for increasing brain power:

Blueberries:

A lot of people dont even know that blueberries are not only delicious, but they are good for your short-term memory. The reason for this is because they are very rich in anti-oxidants, which fight off free radicals. Free-radicals are what exist in everyday life such as indoor and outdoor pollution. These free-radicals affect our memory and concentration, but the anti-oxidant power in blueberries keeps these free-radicals from attacking our brain capacity. In a laboratory study in Boston, scientists gave one group of rats a diet rich in blueberries. They gave the other group of rats a diet with no blueberries at all. What they found in this study was that the blueberries stave off declines in our brains abilities to send messages to one another. So in other words, blueberries actually work as an anti-aging remedy for our brains.

Fish:

Fish are great in helping your overall brainpower, mental clarity, and memory as well. The reason for this is that they are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids improve brain function. The fatty acid is also known as DHA. There are studies that show that diets that are low in DHA are linked to alzheimer’s disease and memory loss.

Tomatoes:

There is some powerful evidence to suggest that the lycopene found in tomatoes and tomato products such as ketchup are good for your brain. This wonderful nutrient, lycopene, is naturally very abundant in the tomato fruit.

Pumpkin Seeds:

Pumpkin Seeds are also a natural way to improve your memory and brain function. The reason for this is these seeds are naturally packed with anti-oxidants and are full of Omega-3 fatty acids, which is an excellent brain-boosting nutrient.

Wild Salmon:

Salmon and other deep,cold-water fish are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega-3s are essential for brain function and also contain anti- inflammatory substances. Other oily fish that provide the benefits of omega-3s are sardines and herring. **Recommendation: Add a 4-ounce serving of salmon or other Omega-3 rich fish to your diet two to three times a week.

Citrus Fruits and Colorful Vegetables:

Because of their antioxidant properties, citrus fruits and colorful vegetables are high on the list of brainy foods . The more colorful the better. Brightly colored yellow, orange, red, purple and green fruits and vegetables are antioxidant rich. Go for orange with carrots, apricots, cantaloupe, mango, papaya and oranges. Blueberries, blackberries, prunes, red grapes and eggplant add a blue/purple hue to your plate. Add red to your diet with cherries, tomoatoes and red pepper. The best antioxidant source of green vegetables are found in the dark green vegetables – spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, brusell sproats, broccoli. **Recommendation: As many colorful vegetables as you can, with an absolute minimum of five servings daily. Since colorful fruits are higher in calories, add two to four servings daily to your diet.

Increase Water Intake:

Given that your brain is about 80 percent water, the first rule of brain nutrition is adequate water to hydrate your brain. Even slight dehydration can raise stress hormones which can damage your brain over time. Drink at least 84 ounces of water a day. It is best to have your liquids unpolluted with artificial sweeteners, sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. You can use herbal, non-caffeinated tea bags, such as raspberry or strawberry flavored, and make unsweetened iced tea. Green tea is also good for brain function as it contains chemicals that enhance mental relaxation and alertness.

Nuts and Seeds:

Nuts and seeds are an excellent source of the power antioxidant Vitamin E. Studies show that higher levels of vitamin E correspond with less cognitive decline. Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts, almonds, cashews, peanuts and unhydrogenated nut butters all provde benefits. **Recommendation: Add an ounce of nuts or seeds to your daily diet. Be careful that you do not overdo this brain-booster. Too much of this higgher calorie food will add to your waistline.

Beans:

Beans stabilize glucose (blood sugar) levels. The brain cannot store glucose and The brain is dependent on glucose for fuel yet cannot store glucose. Beans rpovide steady stream of energy, as well as a high amount of fiber. With so many varieties – black beans, lima beans, pinto, kidney, garbanzo,Great Northern, Navy and others – it’s easy to add variety in this under-recognized super food section. Peas and lentils, other foods in the legume family, also provide benefit. Add at least a 1/2 cup of beans or other legumes to your diet every day.

Whole Grains:

Oatmeal, brown rice, whole-grain breads, popcorn and barley prmotoe cardiovascular health and good blood flow throughout the organ system, which includes the brain. Wheat germ, though not technically a whole grain, also goes on the superfoods list because wheat germ adds fiber, Vitamin E and some omega-3s. Add three slices of whole grain bread, a 1/2 cup of oatmeal or other whole-grain cereal, or two tablespoons of wheat germ to your daily diet.

Freshly Brewed Tea:

Whether it is hot or iced, freshly brewed tea contains a modest amount of caffeine which, when used in moderation, can boost brain power by enhancing memory, focus, and mood. Tea also has potent antioxidants, especially the class known as catechines, which promotes healthy blood flow. Green tea contains chemicals that enhance mental relaxation and alertness and is especially good for brain function. Two to three cups a day of freshly brewed tea. Note that bottled or powdered teas dont count.

Dark Chocolate:

Dark chocolate contains several natural stimulants, including caffeine, which enhance focus and concentration, have powerful antioxidant properties and stimulate the production of endorphins to helps improve mood. Like nuts, seeds and avocado, this is another brain- boosting super food to be used in moderation. Enjoy 1/2 ounce of dark chocolate daily. Note that the more processed chocolate varieties such as milk chocolate and white chocolate do not provide the same amount of benefit as dark chocolate.

Knowledge and Persistence leads to success
I have always been fascinated by the question ,why some people can and others can’t? I spent years trying to figure this out. At first it was mainly for myself. I remember growing up with little confidence and under the impression that others were more capable than I was. The fact was that this impression was true. It was true because i believed it.

How to increase your brain power means how to increase two capacities of the human brain, called neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

Neurogenesis is the term used to describe the brains ability to grow new brain cells every day, given the absence of stress hormones or other poisons like ethyl alcohol.

Those neuronal stem cells can be incorporated into already existing circuits in the brain if they are challenged by novel learning experiences, like learning a new language or a new instrument, or by using a computerized brain fitness program.

Neuroplasticity describes the brains ability to create new connections between neurons. Your brain is constantly seeking to make new connections, which is a good thing for those of us getting old enough to be concerned with Alzheimers Disease.

If we give the brain enough of the correct kind of stimulation with the correct amount of feedback, those neurons will forge a cognitive reserve of connections available for rerouting signals around plaques in the brain.

So how do I make the brain a great place for neurogenesis and neuroplasticity?

A good place to start is with the excellent e-book, Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans,Ph.D, and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D., neuroscientists at the University of Michigan.

They say we can make our brain its best if we take care of the pillars of brain fitness, which are physical exercise, nutrition, including omega 3 fatty acid, sleep, stress management, and the novel learning experience.

Physical exercise is the most important factor for increased brain power, and the good news is that physical exercise does not need to mean lifting huge barbells at the local gym.

For your brain, and its neurogenesis, walking is just fine, and if you already walk, do a little more.

If you are doing more, or you are ready to challenge your body a bit, all in the name of increased neurogenesis or course, then take a look at the exercise routine, Scott and Angie Tousignant have put together.

Evans and Burghardt also talk about the importance of nutrition, including antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acid. Your brain is 2% of your weight, but uses 20% of your fuel consumption every day.

How to increase brain power must include a steady flow of nutrients from fruit and vegetables, vine ripened and locally grown if at all possible.

A number of very important memory consolidation and hormonal events take place during your sleep, and if you cut short your sleep, you diminish your brain power.

Stress hormones kill new neurons. Do you have an antidote for stress which works fast? Say deep breathing or HeartMath.

We need stress responses if we are under attack and need to act, but to use the stress response to increase production or to earn more income is an abuse of its purpose and will quickly undermine our efforts with decreased brain power.

If you like technological stress management tools, here is the best.

So you have taken care of physical exercise, sleep, nutrition, stress management, and you are ready to try out the novel learning experience using computerized brain fitness programs.

I have used three of them myself because I wanted to see what they were like, and what impact they had on my ability to function cognitively.

I liked all of them, and each had a different impact. The Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro was a huge gift to my attention and focus, and my short term memory, which is usually really short for all of us. It is the tool which increases IQ. Evans and Burghardt discuss the research behind this one too.

The Posit Science Brain Fitness Program made a wonderful difference in my ability to recall words, and Lumosity taught me about how quickly, even in the middle of increasing my brain power, I can lose my focus, and begin to daydream.

Lumosity has also helped me to learn to recover quickly and get back to the task at hand.

None of those experiences alone sounds like an increase in income or fame and fortune, but add them together and I am more happily productive.

Reading is a hobby enjoyed by millions of people all around the world. It is a joy to be able to share stories, fictional or true, and interact through literature. Reading is also a portal to different worlds, cultures, times in history, and fantasies. Books are a haven of imagination and freedom of speech.

It’s always nice to savor a good book. Sometimes, however, it takes us longer to savor that book when we don’t have the ability to speed read. Reading quickly is a challenge because it forces the brain to interpret ideas and figure out what is going on faster than normal. Our mind wants to get the full picture before it moves on, thus making us read slower. Many people speed read but have no idea what is actually happening in the story. It is important for us to read fast but also make sure we understand the plot and all of the events.

You can speed read with very simple training. If one wishes to read faster, he or she must increase their memory capacity and intake rate. This is done by increasing brain power all together. (Zox Brain Power System is a great course that trains the brain to work faster and more efficiently.)

The first step is to increase your memory. Simply doing exercises such as flash cards with random imagery or text will do. Even games like “Simon Says” are great training. Second, you want to increase your brain’s intake rate. This can be done by observing fast moving pictures and looking for small details. Your eyes are forced to follow the image(s) and see details which translates to when you’re reading a book. You must observe small words and details while looking at the big picture.

The two steps above are the main steps in speed reading. Once you accomplish these stages, I recommend that you try the Zox Brain Power System. It will help you go from using 2% of your brain power to over 40%!

              The advances in medical science since World War II have seen life expectancy rise by several decades. Now, the challenge faced by medicine is – how do you maintain a person’s quality of life, for a span of 80 years or greater?

The key to staying fit lies in one simple dictum – stay fit, stay active. This applies as much to the mind as to the body. In fact, the brain responds much better to regular activity than even the body, as it is not susceptible to “stress injury” the way our bodily muscles are. With regular mental exercise, an 80-year old can give his grandchildren a run for their money in memory and concentration tests.

Here are a few mental exercises that will improve your memory and concentration, leaving you better equipped to handle household tasks, professional jobs and everything you need to do during the day. Best of all, these exercises become part of your daily routine rather than a separate “task”, so you do not need to dedicate a chunk of time to improving your memory.

1. An itinerary check. Every night, write down your itinerary for the next day. The next morning, try to recall each item on that itinerary without checking your list until you finish. This little trick adds structure to your life and also allows for better time management, as well as improving your memory.

2. Give up speed dials. Memory is lost in little bits and pieces. The more you make a sustained effort to recall things, the more you will find yourself able to do so. Start by dialing numbers manually instead of looking at the phone book every time. If someone tells you a number, try to remember it for the ten seconds you need to find pen and paper rather than asking them to tell you again when the pen is in your hand.

3. Keep the shopping list in your pocket. Sure, make a list when you go shopping. But when you reach the shop, use your memory first. Do not check your shopping list until you have spent five minutes thinking about what you forgot.

4. Face the thoughts under the carpet. Have you ever found yourself blocking things out, refusing to deal with them, and having those things attack with a vengeance when you try to concentrate? You aren’t alone – in fact, this is the primary reason behind most peoples’ forgetfulness. Book yourself a counseling session, and begin dealing with your repressed thoughts. With a clearer head, you will find your memory and concentration growing to much higher levels.

One of the things people do not realize about memory loss is that it is preventable. If you have never had a good memory, memory tricks make sure that it does not get worse in the long run. With a healthy mind, clear of toxic thoughts and needless worries, you will find yourself quicker, sharper and more competent, very far indeed from falling victim to dementia.

Use your brain more (duh!) Sounds easy. But how many times do you reach for the keyboard to search for something you already know but can’t be bothered to remember? How many times do you use a calculator, even for really simple calculations, rather than mental arithmetic? Set yourself a goal to complete a new puzzle each day. Whether it’s a crossword, Sudoku, a brainteaser or whatever.

Do not play the music you are memorizing without taking frequent rests. In establishing permanent memory, it is much more effective to memorize in repeated short sessions than to memorize in one continuous session. Play the music that you’ve just learned several times so that you’ve developed somewhat a comfortable memory of it. Then walk away from the piano and give your mind time to unwind from the exercise; this resting period should last 10 minutes or more. When you return to the piano and try to play the music again, you should feel more challenged than you did before taking the break. The mental effort you make in restoring the notes at this time will greatly reinforce your memory. Do this repeatedly during your practice sessions.

Shoulder and Neck Support Pillows come in many different designs. Some are standard pillow sizes with extra support along the long sides, with a hollow in the middle for your head. They are available in Memory Foam or standard foam configurations. Others are simple, straight rolls positioned under your neck, close to the base of the skull, where they serve as acupressure, relieving strain on your neck. Still others are U-shaped so you can position the base of the U under your neck and rest your head against either side. The straight and U-shaped rolls are both versatile for other affected areas and easy to carry when you travel.

It is very easy to create slideshows from your photos and videos with slideshow software yourself, but it is not easy to create some awesome slideshows. The key to make your slideshows awesome is simple: wow them with originality. So, regardless of whether you’re doing a slideshow on a birthday party, a wedding or on a great trip, keeping it creative is just a matter of detail. Here are some tips on the popular topics of slideshows such as wedding, anniversaries, birthdays, babies, etc.

Memory materials might also be used to build a motor in a UAV that would allow water to flow through, such as a diaphragm membrane, which might drive single piston. “Ferromagnetic” memory materials can be shaped for this type of use; for example, manganese or gallium. One might fit small units into capsules that are inserted into a tube and placed inside of a Navy Seal or fighter pilot suit. If one discovered a way to set these capsules to vibrate, the sound would give away their position for extraction or rescue.

Exponentially increased abilities for gathering, storing, comprehending, synthesizing, sorting, implementing and retaining new-found knowledge. Improved concentration and efficiency for stress-free learning.

Stress, fatigue, emotional problems and even old age can make your memory rusty. When it does, you tend to forget where you placed your keys, miss appointments with the dentist or even forget the names of friends. These lapses in your memory are actually normal and understandable but can be completely preventable. You can actually do a lot of things and eat a lot stuff that can help make you remember things more clearly. If you are clueless on what to do to sharpen your ability to recall and recollect, read on and follow the tips below:

Keep Away From Brain Drainers

If you want to have strong cognitive abilities even when you are in your 80s, then you need to start avoiding the things that kill your brain cells. How are you going to keep a sharp memory when you are depleting the cells that are essential in making you remember things?

The number one brain drainer is chronic stress. Being in a perpetual state of stress can truly zap away your brain cells and make your mind function less efficiently. Simple organizational skills, a little help from other people, and a bit or rest and relaxation can help you fight stress.

Too much alcohol is also responsible for making your mind dense. Even if you eat right and exercise regularly, if you regularly consume huge amounts of alcohol, your efforts in boosting your brain power will go down the drain. Alcohol is definitely a brain drainer.

Other brain drainers you need to avoid are smoking, taking drugs, and sleep deprivation. Talk to people who have insomnia or haven’t slept well for a while and you will realize that their thoughts can be scattered and incoherent.

Let Blood Flow

To have a clear mind, you need to make sure that your blood circulation is optimal. If there are problems with your blood flow, oxygen and other nutrients that your mind needs will not be able to reach the brain. Buildup of fats and cholesterol in your arteries do not only pose cardiovascular problems, but also brain fogging.

In order to keep your blood flowing flawlessly, you need to minimize, if not totally eliminate, food that are rich in fat and bad cholesterol. Lay low when it comes to mayonnaise, margarine, butter, fat meats, and rich desserts.

Exercise Your Mind And Body

Physical fitness is important in helping improve blood circulation and preventing clogged arteries. Thus, you need to exercise regularly, walk at least 10,000 steps a day, and do some weight training to build your bones.

Aside from physical exercise, you also need to do some mental exercises. Like muscles in your body, the brain will atrophy when not in use. Thus, you should read a lot, do some crossword puzzles or play some mind-bending games. Doing mathematical problems in your head can also sharpen your mind and improve your memory. Remember, the more you use your brain, the better it becomes.

Go For The Bs

Eating a healthy diet is crucial in keeping your mind and body in tiptop shape. However, no matter how much you eat vegetables and fruits, your body’s ability to absorb nutrients gets less efficient as you grow older.

In order to keep your mind buzzing, you need to increase your intake of B vitamins. Experts believe that deficiency in vitamins B6 and B12, niacin, and thiamin can contribute to future cognitive problems. You can get these B vitamins in enriched grains, meat, potatoes, bananas and shellfish. You can also take some supplements that have all the B vitamins that you need.

Cleanse Your Gut

Years of consuming fatty foods, junk and sugar-rich desserts can contribute to fogginess of your mind. If you have been eating fast foods and low-fiber diet for the last couple of years, then there is a big chance that your gut is not in a very good shape. Remember, the absorption of vitamins and minerals needed by your brain happens in your intestines. Thus, if your colon is in such a bad shape, your body will not be able to efficiently absorb the nutrients from the food that you eat and the supplements that you take.

One safe and easy way to cleanse your colon is through detoxification. There are products in the market that can help you achieve a no-fuss detoxification, so you don’t have to lose mind over it. One detox system that not only cleanses your gut but also helps in repairing tissues is Colpurin.
